It is just 10 miles north of downtown Indianapolis and offers easy access to several highways. LOCATION
Carmel is located in Clay Township, Hamilton County, immediately north of Indianapolis on highways US 31 and IN 431. I-465 on the southern edge of the city connects four major interstates, more than any other metropolitan area in the state. Distance from Carmel to downtown Indianapolis is approximately 15 miles. Distance from Carmel to the Indianapolis International Airport is approximately 25 miles.

GOVERNMENT
Facts : Carmel is governed by a mayor, seven city council members, a clerk/treasurer and a judge, all of whom are elected.
Fire The mayor administers the city with the help of a Board of Public Works and Safety, composed of three members: the mayor and two of his/her appointments.
Library : The city also has a Plan Commission and a Board of Zoning Appeals, which are composed of appointed individuals. The Plan Commission deals with land use, while the Board of Zoning Appeals handles appeals for variances from the zoning ordinances. Both bodies also take care of land use and variance appeals for Clay Township.
